Game of Thrones showrunners’ new Netflix series begins casting
By Dan Selcke
Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are adapting sci-fi epic The Three-Body Problem for Netflix, and things are getting off the ground.
Last year, we learned that Game of Thrones showrunner David Benioff and Dan Weiss were going to adapt author Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past, better known as The Three-Body Problem, for Netflix. This sprawling science fiction story tells the story of Earth preparing for its first contact with an alien civilization on its way from a distant, inhospitable world.
We haven’t heard anything about this project for a while. Shows like this take a while to produce, of course, but The Three-Body Problem ran into some especially big issues when Republican Senators sent a letter to Netflix objecting to the project because of Liu Cixin’s statements supporting the internment of Uyghur Muslims in the northwestern province of Xinjiang, something widely seen as a human rights abuse by the international community. Last we heard, Netflix was moving ahead with the project, but I wondered if they might just let it quietly fade away rather than juggle a political hot potato.
But it looks like things are indeed moving forward! Deadline now reports that Eiza Gonzalez is in talks to star in the show. If they’re casting, something is happening.
The Terror: Infamy co-create Alexander Woo will executive produce and write the show alongside Benioff and Weiss. Knives Out director Rian Johnson will also executive produce with his producing partner Ram Bergman. Rosamund Pike and Robie Uniacke are also involved through their production company Primitive Streak.
There’s no word on when The Three-Body Problem may premiere on Netflix as of yet. They probably have a ways to go before they can show something solid.
