James Gunn “will be back” to do more DC movies after The Suicide Squad
By Ariba Bhuvad
Don’t count out James Gunn just yet, ladies and gentlemen! After what seems to be a marvelous success, The Suicide Squad director could return to do more DC movies for Warner Bros.
I’m not surprised that Warner Bros. would Gunn back. A lot of the DCEU movies have struggled critically, but the tide could be turning with The Suicide Squad, which has received almost universal rave reviews.
The Suicide Squad’s critical success comes after a strange journey for Guardians of the Galaxy director Gunn, who was booted from Disney for a series of controversial tweets, hired by Warner Bros. to do The Suicide Squad, and eventually rehired by Disney to make Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, DC Films president Walter Hamada alluded to the fact that Gunn’s relationship with DC Films isn’t quite over just yet, not unless Gunn himself wants it to be. In fact, it could be the start of a very beautiful partnership. “Gunn is always welcome back, whatever he wants to do,” said Hamada. “He really has a vision and he’s a great partner with us. Whenever he wants to come back, we’re ready for him. He’ll be back. We have more stuff planned.”
More stuff planned, you say? I’m here for it.
Margot Robbie wouldn’t have made The Suicide Squad with anyone but James Gunn
Gunn seems to be on board with this. He’s already working on Suicide Squad spinoff Peacemaker for HBO Max, and he responded to a fan asking about the possibility of more spinoffs with a boy, “Maaaaaaaaybe” on his Instagram.
It helps to have the backing of Margot Robbie, who reprised her role as Harley Quinn for The Suicide Squad. “If I read the script and didn’t know James Gunn was going to direct it, it would have been a straight-up ‘no,’” Robbie told THR. “I was like, ‘No one could pull this off.’ It’s so specific in its brand of comedy and violence. But it came out of his imagination. He knew exactly what to do with it.”
Straight from the mouth of Harley Quinn herself, folks! And you can see what she and many others are raving about tomorrow, August 6 when The Suicide Squad hits theaters and HBO Max.
