This seven-book young-adult high fantasy series is our first in the list written by a woman. In this series, the protagonist is an enslaved 17-year old assassin named Celaena Sardothien who gets the chance to be free and serve the King. Think of it as Brienne of Tarth getting her own novel series.

5. The Dark Star Trilogy by Marlon James
Though author Marlon James joked that his planned Dark Star trilogy is an “African Game of Thrones,” the description is pretty spot on. The first and only published book so far in the series, Black Leopard, Red Wolf, follows a character called Tracker, who is a skilled hunter. This book combines politics, mythology, and African history to create a new fantasy realm to explore. The second book, Moon Witch, Spider King, is available for pre-order now.

6. The Broken Empire Trilogy by Mark Lawrence
Imagine a book that is part Game of Thrones and part Assassin’s Creed. That would be Mark Lawrence’s The Broken Empire trilogy. As a child, narrator Jorg Ancrath’s mother and brother were murdered.
