Ryan Reynolds: Disney allowed a lot of shocking Easter eggs in Free Guy
By Ariba Bhuvad
After a whole lot of rescheduling, Ryan Reynold’s new movie Free Guy is finally out in theaters! And so far, it seems to be doing pretty well with critics and fans alike. And why wouldn’t it? It’s about a character in an open-world video game who gains awareness, becomes the hero of his own story, and then rewrites his journey. Oh, and it stars Taika Waititi, Stranger Things star Joe Keery, and Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer — need we say more?
In a recent interview with The A.V. Club, Reynolds talked about all the references in the film. Specifically, there’s a lot of Disney stuff in the film, which came as a shocker for to considering Disney doesn’t let just anyone use its precious IP.
“We didn’t have any desire to change a frame of the movie once it was delayed,” Reynolds explained. “We were already locked pretty much at that point, but all those Easter eggs, those were all kind of in there from the jump. Disney bought Fox, which availed us to some pretty weird requests that we threw in to Disney. For some weird and to this day inexplicable reason, Disney allowed us to do some things and use some toys of Disney’s that we would never have thought they would have said yes to or agreed to, but they did. So we ain’t complaining.”
Neither are we.
Ryan Reynolds, Free Guy, and all those Disney Easter eggs
Free Guy is filled with Easter eggs, both Disney-related and not. There’s a lot of references to the game Fortnite, for example, and a cameo by famed streamer Ninja. It’s like watching Ready Player One and Space Jam: A New Legacy collide.
But nothing is more exciting than those seeing Disney Earner eggs pop up, starting with an Avengers: Infinity War poster.
Ryan Reynolds has a double role in Free Guy: he plays Guy, the main character, and also a beefed-up dude named…Dude. In their final battle, Guy is determined to take down Dude once and for all, and brings along two very important tools: a lightsaber and Captain America’s shield. Like, what?! Disney let him do that?!
But that’s not where it ends, ladies and gentlemen! Chris Evans has a cameo in the film as himself, and reacts with shock and surprise when he sees Guy using the Captain America shield. And naturally there are some Deadpool references as well.
I don’t know about all of you, but I feel a Deadpool announcement coming on soon. And now that those movies are officially being made under the Disney umbrella, we may have only seen the start of the references.
