The Suicide Squad had a Guardians of the Galaxy cameo no one noticed
James Gunn brought humor and heart to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his ensemble cast of characters in Guardians of the Galaxy, and now he’s doing the same in the DC Extended Universe. Funnily enough, a few familiar faces from the MCU show up in his new movie The Suicide Squad.
The obvious Marvel stars in The Suicide Squad are Idris Elba, who plays Heimdall in the Thor films; and Michael Rooker, who worked with Gunn on the Guardians movies. Rooker plays Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) adoptive father Yondu, the leader of the Ravagers. He only briefly appears as Savant in Gunn’s DC film, but he leaves an impression.
Rooker’s appearance at the beginning of The Suicide Squad will immediately catch viewers’ eyes, but there are several other Guardians stars who crop up throughout the film. Sean Gunn and Sylvestor Stallone, who are both in the Guardians movies, appear in the new film, with Stallone voicing King Shark.
Marvel fans were quick to point out those crossovers, but Gunn told Variety that one other Guardians cameo has flown under the radar. Pom Klementieff, who plays Mantis in the Guardians films, also appears in the The Suicide Squad. “I talked to Pom the other day,” Gunn said. “I’m like, have people been asking you? She’s like, yeah, a couple of people. But she’s just not being recognized. I’m like, what is going on? I can’t believe it!”
Where does Pom Klementieff appear in The Suicide Squad?
Those wondering where Klementieff shows up in The Suicide Squad, take a closer look when the members of Task Force X go out for a drink. To be fair, there’s a lot to take in during this scene, from the tensions between Bloodsport (Idris Elba) and Peacemaker (John Cena) to Sebastian the rat demanding a beer.
While the characters are at the bar La Gatita Amable, Klementieff can be spotted dancing in the background. The camera focuses on her just long enough to give people a spark of recognition.
It’s nice to see Gunn and his Marvel colleagues dipping their toes into the DCEU, especially after moviegoers have spent so long wishing the franchise would embrace some of the qualities that have made the MCU so successful.
Hopefully, Gunn will continue to infuse both franchises with his signature style. We wouldn’t complain about more crossovers when it comes to talent either.
