American Horror Story: Double Feature premieres on August 25, and the first trailer presents more questions than answers. The tenth season of Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology features a twist: there will be two stories worked into one season, and the new trailer reveals what’s coming in the first half.

“Red Tide” is the first story in the new season. It centers on Finn Wittrock as a struggling writer who will do anything to get over his writer’s block. He and his wife (Lily Rabe) move to a small seaside town to find solitude; it looks like their new home is a beacon for struggling artists.

The inspiration comes at a terrible price. Evan Peters and Frances Conroy reveal that the town has secrets, and now the writer is in too deep to escape.

American Horror Story: Double Feature has aliens, mermaids and more

Early teasers for American Horror Story: Double Feature indicated that creepy mermaids and aliens could also feature into the new season:

But teasers and previews usually mean next to nothing when it comes to American Horror Story; they often end up being red herrings that throw fans off the trail of what the story is really about.

In Double Feature’s case, it seems as though something supernatural is helping artists to discover their inspiration. In the teaser, aliens are manipulating the violin that Rabe and Rabe’s daughter are playing in the trailer. Whether it’s actual aliens or figurative aliens pulling the strings, the bottom line is that strings are being pulled by someone or something in this creepy town, and they seem to like blood as their payment.

Now in its tenth season, AHS has evolved over the years into a series that takes complex issues and gives them a supernatural twist. Season 7’s American Horror Story: Cult, for example, took inspiration from the 2016 presidential election to tell a story about cult members and the devastating effects of paranoia.

In other words, expect the unexpected from AHS: Double Feature, and don’t be surprised if nary an alien nor mermaid ever shows up….
