AMC is already casting for its upcoming Interview With The Vampire series, based on the book by Anne Rice. But the network isn’t stopping there. It wants a whole Anne Rice Universe with lots of shows, and is now moving forward with the creation of a series based on Rice The Lives of the Mayfair Witches novels.

The A.V. Club reports that AMC made the announcement during the Television Critics Association summer press tour. While the series hasn’t been given the green light (yet), it’s opened up a writer’s room, which is the first step.

The Lives of the Mayfair Witches revolves around a San Francisco neurosurgeon named Rowan Mayfair. When her mother dies she becomes the heir to the Mayfair fortune, but she has no idea what that means until she arrives in New Orleans with her lover Michael Curry and discovers the massive Mayfair family and her role as the thirteenth Mayfair designee.

The Lives of the Mayfair Witches will join Anne Rice’s Interview With The Vampire at AMC

The Lives of the Mayfair Witches is based on a trilogy of novels that have been categorized as “Gothic horror,” but there’s so much more to them, including witchcraft, incest, rape, abortion and a species of creatures known as the Taltos.

One such creature, Lasher, has been guiding the Mayfair family toward fortune for centuries, and he sees Rowan’s unborn baby as the opportunity he needs to return to a mortal body. (Lasher is the second book in the trilogy, followed by Taltos.)

The Mayfairs have deep roots in New Orleans. Their legacy is felt everywhere from the Garden District to the bayou, with members of the family tucked away just about everywhere.

Eventually, Rice’s Mayfair witches cross over with her vampires, who also have a long history in New Orleans. AMC has optioned the 18 books that make up The Vampire Chronicles and The Lives of the Mayfair Witches, providing plenty of material to develop and explore Rice’s universe on the small screen.
