The tension between Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) in The Walking Dead has been ongoing since Negan beat Glenn to death with Lucille in the infamous season 7 premiere. Since then, the two have somehow resisted the urge to kill one another, but that may not last for much longer. In a recent interview, star Jeffrey Dean Morgan teased that Negan will “have to kill Maggie” at some point before the show’s conclusion. Of course, it could also go the other way.

The eleventh and final season has 24 episodes rather than the customary 16, so there’s plenty of time for the plot to twist. But for Maggie and Negan to come to terms with being in each other’s company…well, that sounds like too much to ask. (SPOILERS incoming!) As we saw in the season 11 premiere, “Acheron: Part I,” the duo were constantly at each other’s throats.

“[By the time Season 11 starts, already] he’s saved just about everybody at one time or another and put his life on the line to kill Alpha. He’d done some good things,” Jeffrey Dean Morgan told TV Line. “Then suddenly, Maggie’s back, and he’s back at square one from nine years ago, show-wise. It’s precarious at best.”

"I think she’s going to have to kill him, or he’s going to have to kill her, especially as we find them in the first two episodes. It’s not a good place to be for either of them.”"

A lot happened in the time Maggie was absent from the show. There was an entire war against the Whisperers, and Negan was instrumental in our group’s victory by killing Alpha (Samantha Morton). Because of his contributions he was released from his prison and allowed relative freedom inside Alexandria. Now that Maggie has returned to find everything has changed, it sets up some pretty interesting plot points:

“Negan is frustrated, and Maggie is pissed, for obvious reasons, that this guy is out of jail and seemingly in a better headspace than the last time she saw him,” Morgan said. “We’ll see how that plays out, but it’s not going to be an easy run.”

Negan and Maggie work together on The Walking Dead

It’s going to be very interesting to see how the long-running drama between Maggie and Negan is resolved over the course of the season. Perhaps it won’t all be bad. This image shows them taking down a walker together, at least:

As always, we’ll need to be patient to find out what happens! The Walking Dead season 11 premiere is currently available for streaming for AMC+ subscribers. It airs for everyone else on August 22 on AMC, with new episodes every Sunday!
