Disney is currently loading up on Marvel TV series, but what about its other huge franchise, Star Wars? It’s been a while since the end of The Mandalorian — what do Star Wars fans have to whet their appetites until season 3 comes along next year?
Worry not: Disney has an answer for you. The studio just debuted the trailer for Star Wars: Visions, an anthology series where different creators create Star Wars stories in the style of Japanese anime. The trailer is a feast for the eyes. Check it out below:
“Lucasfilm is partnering with seven of the most talented anime studios in Japan to bring their signature style and unique vision of the Star Wars galaxy to this inspired new series,” said Lucasfilm executive James Waugh. “Their stories showcase the full spectrum of bold storytelling found across Japanese animation; each told with a freshness and voice that expands our understanding of what a Star Wars story can be, and celebrates a galaxy that has been such an inspiration to so many visionary storytellers.”
There are 10 Star Wars shorts in all. Here they are, along with the studio behind them:
- “The Duel” (Kamikaze Douga)
- “Lop and Ochō” (Geno Studio)
- “Tatooine Rhapsody” (Studio Colorido)
- “The Twins” (Trigger)
- “The Elder” (Trigger)
- “The Village Bride” (Kinema Citrus)
- “Akakiri” (Science Saru)
- “T0-B1” (Science Saru)
- “The Ninth Jedi” (Production IG)
There’s a wide variety of styles in there — I see inspirations from Studio Ghibli to Dragonball Z. There look to be a lot of different kinds of stories, too; sure, there are epic lightsaber battles, but also a story about a couple of kids thrilled to become “a proper family.”
Who’s in the cast of Star Wars: Visions?
The cast for the English dub is impressive, and includes folks like Lucy Liu, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bobby Moynihan, Temuera Morrison, Neil Patrick Harris, Alison Brie, Simu Liu, David Harbour, Henry Golding, George Takei, and many more.
Star Wars: Visions premieres on Disney+ on September 22.
