Anthony Mackie will take up the iconic shield as the headliner in Captain America 4, a new movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Anthony Mackie first joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, playing war veteran Sam Wilson. He eventually became the superhero Falcon, and continued on that track all the way through Avengers: Endgame, when Steve Rogers himself picked him as the man to take up the shield and become the new Captain America.

Sam grappled with that responsibility all throughout the TV show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+, but ended the series by fully taking up the mantle (and debuting a pretty cool new star-spangled outfit). And now, Deadline announces that Mackie has signed on to play Captain America in a new movie: Captain America 4, to be written by The Falcon and the Winter Soldier head writer and creator Malcolm Spellman, together with series staff writer Dalan Musson. I imagine the title isn’t final.

The first three Captain America films were 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, the aforementioned Winter Soldier, and 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, which was really more of an Avengers movie, but who’s counting? All of them starring Chris Evans in the title role, but the mantle has been officially passed.

This is great news for Mackie, who has always been one of the best arrows in Marvel’s quiver. There’s no word yet on whether Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier will make an appearance in the movie, nor when it might come out. We also don’t know who’s directing it. Basically, we don’t know much, but the fact that it exists at all will surely cheer Marvel fans!
