Olly Alexander is seen as one of the most popular picks to replace Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor after she leaves Doctor Who in 2022. Alexander laud speculation to rest in a new interview with Capital FM.
Alexander is known for his music as well as his acting. The It’s A Sin star appeared on Capital FM to talk about his group Years & Years’ appearance on the Capital Up Close stage, and host Sonny Jay couldn’t help but ask about Doctor Who, noting that Peter Capaldi — the Twelfth Doctor himself — said that Olly would make a great Doctor. “Well I think it’s great,” Alexander replied, “I would say bringing some of his pop costumes that would be good to have Doctor Who dressed like, because he dresses very cool.”
But when pressed about whether he was playing the role, Alexander didn’t mince words: “No,” he said, laughing.
Presenter Roman Kemp doubled down. “Can I just say I think you’d be fantastic,” he said of the idea of Alexander as the Doctor. “And if they are listening, I’m sure they are, they couldn’t pick anyone better.”
Olly Alexander is getting used to saying he’s not the next Doctor on Doctor Who
Alexander has been in the discussion as someone who could take over the iconic role for a while, long before Whittaker’s departure was formally announced. Though many Doctor Who fans see Alexander as a natural fit for the show, Alexander’s camp insists that he never had conversations with the BBC about the role.
Alexander’s manager Martha Kinn even released a cleverly worded statement to that effect: “Even though Olly is often contacted by Cybermen, I’m afraid I have to exterminate this speculation. As nice as it is to see interest in this story regenerate, it just isn’t true. As Ood as it might sound, Olly is focusing on his music, for the time being.”
If he did get the part, Alexander wouldn’t be the only pop star in the Doctor Who franchise. Former Companion Billie Piper (Rose Tyler) was a pop singer before joining the cast, and Capaldi was known to bust out an electric guitar on occasion.
Though Alexander might be a good fit for the character, don’t expect him to announce that he’s a contender for the role. The BBC will keep the new Doctor’s identity a closely guarded secret, so for now all we can do is speculate about the next person to pilot the TARDIS.
