Netflix is home to some of the most popular movies and series around, from comedies to dramas to action flicks to cooking shows. Though it features a wide variety of programming, Game of Thrones is not on Netflix.
Game of Thrones, based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, was one of the most popular shows in HBO’s history. The flagship series ended in 2019 after eight seasons, and now it has a home on HBO and HBO Max.
Now that HBO has its own streaming platform, there’s even less reason for Game of Thrones to be Netflix than there used to be. Prior to the explosive growth of streaming services, it could have made sense for HBO to join forces with Netflix so that more people could watch the show and potentially be convinced to subscribe to the cable network. But times have changed.
Game of Thrones is not on Netflix
HBO is expanding the franchise with several new spin-offs, starting with House of the Dragon in 2022. Other projects that are in various stages of development include Tales of Dunk and Egg, 10,000 Ships, 9 Voyages and Flea Bottom. There are also whispers of animated series in the works, not to mention a Broadway play.
Martin’s world is incredibly vast, and it makes sense that HBO would want to return to Westeros. Licensing the series to another streamer, especially Netflix, would be a mistake. The release of new series in the Game of Thrones universe guarantees a buzzy new series for HBO Max, bringing new fans to the platform.
With so much potential for growth, HBO executives are betting on the Game of Thrones franchise to have enough interest and staying power to develop into a massive interconnected universe spanning the series’ past, present and future, and it will be keeping that franchise all to itself.
