Star Robert Pattinson and director Matt Reeves tease what to expect from The Batman, alongside some new footage.
Warner Bros. showed off a new look at The Batman the other day at Cinema Con. The general public wasn’t there, but the folks at ComicBook.com were, and they reported what went down.
The Batman is the studio’s latest crack at a story centered around the famous DC superhero, starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne. “For some reason, Batman has always stood to as one of the major characters of the 20th century,” Pattinson said as part of the video message.
Director Matt Reeves also weighed in, promising that The Batman will be “radically different” from the many Batman movies that have come before. According to the director, The Batman isn’t an origin story, but it is set Bruce Wayne’s early days of fighting crime, when he’s young and angry.
“He’s really working out this rage,” Pattinson says. “All the fights seem very personal.” This plays out over footage of Batman brutally beating people up with various weapons, including pipes. We see explosions, police officers, a glimpse of Andy Serkis as Alfred, and the Batmobile ripping through Gotham City with flames coming out the exhaust.
“We can’t wait for you to see The Batman in theaters, next year,” Reeves finishes. Then attendees got to watch an updated version of the teaser trailer that was released last year, with a fresh look at Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) and new dialogue between Batman and the Riddler (Paul Dano). “You’re a part of this, too,” the Riddler says. “How am I a part of this?” Batman responds. “You’ll see.”
So it sounds like Reeves and company are going for a dark, gritty interpretation of Batman, which is an enduringly popular choice. It sounds a little like how Zack Snyder and Ben Affleck handled the character in Batman v Superman and Justice League, although that version of Batman was further on in his career than Pattinson’s version.
The Batman is due out on March 4, 2022.
