Emilia Clarke’s Star Wars character is getting her own comic series
By Dan Selcke
Emilia Clarke only got to play Qi’ra the once in Solo: A Star Wars Story, but if this new comic series takes off, who knows?
Solo: A Star Wars Story, about the early days of Han Solo, didn’t do as well as Disney had hoped, and the outlook for a sequel seems dim. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t have an impact. The character of Qi’ra, Han Solo’s childhood friend-turned-survivalist criminal played by Game of Thrones veteran Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), has been a hit with fans. And now, according to IGN, she’s getting her own comic book series by Charles Soule: Star Wars: Crimson Reign.
Crimson Reign will follow up on another comic called War of the Bounty Hunters, which according to Soule was “really a Boba Fett story. I have a bigger story I’m going to tell with Qi’ra and Crimson Dawn, and it’s all connected to the reasons she kicked things off in War of the Bounty Hunters in the first place. You’ll learn more about that in the closing pages of War of the Bounty Hunters #5, out in October, and I think fans have no idea how exciting and new this story will feel.”
"I planned to tell the story we’re seeing in War of the Bounty Hunters from the very first pitches I wrote when I knew I’d be taking over the Star Wars title for Marvel. But it was really when I knew I had a secret weapon to deploy storywise that the seeds of Crimson Reign began to take root in my mind: Qi’ra, former paramour of Han Solo and current leader of the infamous Crimson Dawn crime syndicate."
This new story will take place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, so the Rebels are currently getting hammered by the Empire. Where will Qi’ra’s loyalties lie? “Crimson Reign, which continues what I plan as a trilogy that began with War of the Bounty Hunters, is a great example of how I like to write Star Wars stories,” Soule continued. “Everything and everyone is fair game, and I think people are really going to enjoy it. Await the Reign.”
And if any of these comics should explode in popularity and convince Disney to draft Emilia Clarke into making a Qi’ra movie, well that’d be just swell.
Star Wars: Crimson Reign will debut in November of this year.
