All eyes are on HBO as they prepare their follow-up to the phenomenally successful Game of ThronesHouse of the DragonGame of Thrones took the network to historic heights, but the ending left a bitter taste in fans mouths. Are they ready for more of this world? HBO is counting on it.

House of the Dragon is a prequel, set some 180 years before Game of Thrones. It tells the story of the Dance of the Dragons, a brutal civil war fought between opposing factions within the Targaryen family, then at the height of their power as rulers of the Seven Kingdoms. Brother will fight sister, uncle will fight nephew, and dragon will fight dragon in the skies above Westeros.

It’s a good story, and HBO is pouring plenty of resources into making sure the first season lives up to expectations. But when will we get to watch it?

House of the Dragon release date

Filming on House of the Dragon has been going on for months, but outside of some photos near the beginning of the shoot HBO hasn’t given us many updates. Nonetheless, they have revealed that the show won’t premiere until 2022. The first season will consist of 10 episodes.

When House of the Dragon does premiere, it will find itself in a very different TV landscape than Game of Thrones when it made its debut in 2011. Back then, Game of Thrones was pretty much the only high fantasy game in town. But now, Amazon Prime Video is readying shows based on The Wheel of Time and The Lord of the Rings, Disney has exploded into the TV space with shows set in the Marvel and Star Wars universes, and Netflix has had hits with series like The Witcher and Shadow and Bone.

Can House of the Dragon distinguish itself and hold onto the Game of Thrones crown? We’ll find out soon enough.
