Kit Harington recently spoke with PTI about his experience on Game of Thrones while promoting his new show Modern Love, and he opened up about people who think Game of Thrones is based on real events.

There’s a moment in Modern Love when Harington’s character is chatting with his brother about his love interest Paula, and how she studies Medievalism. “Like Game of Thrones?” his brother teases.

“I’ve met people who have said to me, ‘You know, I don’t know much about that stuff. I’ve never been much of a history buff,’” Harington said. “And I was like, ‘Really? I’m not sure you have to be.””

Jurassic Park is a great movie but don’t walk away from it thinking you’ve received a lesson in general biology or genetics. Similarly, there are people (I have experienced this myself) who think that Steampunk is based on an era of British history.

In the same vein, Game of Thrones does not provide a history lesson, even though some people might think it’s based on medieval times. While there is a fair amount of worldbuilding involved in Game of Thrones, and that can feel like history in a lot of ways, it’s not real history at all. Unless dragons are real and there’s some big conspiracy to hide it from us….

Harington’s new show Modern Love is a complete departure from his time on Game of Thrones. The actor said he was looking for something different from Jon Snow. “I wasn’t in a place where I wanted to do something particularly dark. I said yes just when my wife became pregnant and so I was feeling sort of very weirdly upbeat and at the same time terrified about the world. So this sort of felt like something I needed to do.”
