Amazon Prime Video has finally released a teaser trailer for The Wheel of Time, its adaptation of Robert Jordan’s 14-book strong epic fantasy series. Fans have waited a very long time for these novels to be adapted for the screen, and if the trailer is any indication, Amazon’s show won’t disappoint them. Watch below!
The Wheel of Time stars Josha Stradowski as our hero Rand al’Thor, Marcus Rutherford as his childhood friend Perrin Aybara, Barney Harris as his other childhood friend Mat Cauthon, Madeleine Madden as his crush Egwene al’Vere, and Zoë Robins as the bold Nynaeve al’Meara. These five are all from the sleepy fantasy backwater of Emond’s Field, and are whisked away on a grand adventure by the Aes Sedai sorceress Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) and her guardian al’Lan Mandragoran (Daniel Henney).
Clearly, Amazon is not skimping on expense; this looks as good as anything from Game of Thrones or The Lord of the Rings. Speaking of Game of Thrones, anybody notice Michael McElhatton (Roose Bolton) in there as Rand’s father Tam al’Thor? He’s a good guy in this one, so try not to hold his time in Westeros against him.
Here’re a few other highlights I noticed:
- The beautiful cityscape is likely Tar Valon, where Aes Sedai sorceresses go to train. As they mention in the trailer, only women are able to use the One Power in this world, which basically means only women can wield magic. The why of it is too complicated for one bullet point.
- Sophie Okonedo plays Siuan Sanche, the Amyrlin Seat. She’s the leader of the Aes Sedai. Here she is (probably) about to make a metaphor about fish:
- You see Aes Sedai in different-colored clothes throughout the trailer. They divide themselves up like that. Moiraine is member of the Blue Ajah, who are involved with justice. The Green Ajah are the warrior Aes Sedai, and so on.
- The shadowy city we see is Shadar Logoth, where our heroes have a nasty experience partway through the first book, The Eye of the World. Think of it as the “Mines of Moria” section of the story.
- We get a glimpse of the Myrddraal, servants of the evil Dark One, and they look pretty creepy, what with their tooth-filled mouths and lack of eyes.
There’s definitely more in there. What did you notice?
