Shang-Chi star Simu Liu really wants to be in an Avengers movie
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings hit theaters this weekend, marking Simu Liu’s entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The star plays the titular hero of the film, one of the first new additions to Marvel’s Phase 4 lineup.
The initial reactions to Shang-Chi have been promising, and much of the praise centers on the film’s cast. Naturally, Liu is garnering the most attention as the movie makes its debut. The actor has been promoting the film on Twitter for months — and that’s after using the platform to petition for the role in the first place.
Naturally, Liu is excited about his first outing as a Marvel hero, but he’s also looking to the future. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he admitted there’s one thing he’d like to do during his time in the MCU: be part of an Avengers movie. “I know what’s on my mind is the same as what’s on everybody else’s mind,” he said. “And hopefully, there’s an Avengers in the future, somewhere. Obviously, I don’t know anything about that, but being such a big fan of the whole franchise, I know that that’s the gold star.”
A Shang-Chi sequel could be in Simu Liu’s future
There’s no telling if Simu Liu will actually get his Avengers movie (though we’d really like to think so). However, Marvel Studios is reportedly already thinking about sequels for his solo film. At the very least, that means fans can let themselves get attached to the new hero.
During a discussion with ComicBook.com, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige teased the prospect of seeing the Shang-Chi characters again:
"We certainly have many ideas of where to take them and where to put them. And as exactly as you say, what’s so fun, we know the movie’s working when it’s not just the title character that people ask about, but it is the costars or the supporting players that people ask about. And in this movie in particular, that’s heartening because we think they’re spectacular, and we think they have great potential in the future."
Of course, his words could also hint at spinoffs focused on the supporting characters, especially with Marvel expanding its roster to Disney+.
However the studio decides to build on this story, one thing seems certain: we’ll be seeing Simu Liu’s hero and his companions again soon.
