“The fungus Amongus” may have just entered the pantheon of most emotional season finales go. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’s season 6 finale has everything we could have wanted, including  drama, love, goodbyes, and a big fat Legends wedding. Things never go as planned for this group of misfits, but that’s what we love about them. Every episode is unpredictable, hilarious, and a rollercoaster of emotions, and the season 6 finale was no exception.

For the most part, all the storylines wrapped up, although we did have a less-than-satisfying exit for both Constantine (Matt Ryan) and Mick (Dominic Purcell). Ryan will be returning to Legends of Tomorrow, but as a completely different character, but Purcell is saying goodbye, at least for now. I felt their exits were underwhelming given how long they’d been on the Waverider. I’m going to chalk it up to COVID-related issues; maybe they had better stories in mind for them that they couldn’t pull off.

Between the goodbyes and Ava (Jes Macallan) and Sara’s (Caity Lotz) wedding (yes, it finally happened!), the season 6 finale was extremely eventful. And given the way things ended, the season 7 premiere is going to be no less chaotic.

SPOILERS ahead!

The Legends save Spooner

“The Fungus Amongus” sort of brushes over the whole “John Constantine is dead” plot point and focuses on the Fountain of Imperium’s demise. Bringing the Fountain back to life became the Legends’ number one goal because it’s crucial in curing Spooner (Lisseth Chavez). They use a younger version of Bishop (Raffi Barsoumian) to create a cure.

Spooner herself labors to save her mother. If she sticks around, she will likely succumb to the alien species known as the Zagurons, who are on their way thanks to the evil Bishop. The last couple of episodes have focused on Spooner finding her mother in 1925 and learning the truth behind her death, so this is emotional stuff.

I never really cared for Spooner as a character, but gosh darn it, Legends of Tomorrow made me fall in love with her. She truly feels like a part of the Legends now.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow has a wedding!

With all the madness of Bishop’s grand plan unfolding around them, the “end of the world” scenario prompts Ava and Sara to make a split-second decision and have their wedding right then and there. It feels rushed, but if the world is truly ending, there is no better time than now, alongside their beloved fellow Legends.

I was ugly crying watching Mick walk Sara down the aisle, especially because they’re the only original two left from season 1. They share a special bond, so it was the absolute perfect choice.

Ava is walked down the aisle by Gary (Adam Tsekhman), who is overjoyed by his duty. Like Mick and Sara, Ava and Gary have been together for a long time, since their days at the Time Bureau. He calms her down as she tries to write her vows and gives her the confidence she needed.

Bishop strikes again

Naturally, no wedding on Legends of Tomorrow is going to go smoothly. Just as the couple is about to say their “I do’s” in a ceremony officiated by Nate (Nick Zano), Bishop shows up and spreads darkness across the land as his aliens begin to hatch. These aliens thrive in the darkness; they are extremely dangerous and difficult to deal with.

But as the Zagurons attack the Legends, something miraculous happens: they learn that the Fountain is alive once again, which gives Spooner the power to transfer her powers (along with anyone else’s) to whoever needs them. Basically, if Astra (Olivia Swann) needs to turn her body to steel, Spooner can transfer Nate’s powers to her, and if someone needs regeneration abilities, Spooner can transfer Sara’s powers to them.

In typical Legends fashion, Sara and Ava have Nate finish officiating the wedding mid-fight, all while Kayla (Aliyah O’Brien) is doing her best to keep the aliens at bay. It’s such an emotional moment for this beautiful couple, but you can’t help but chuckle that aliens are trying to kill them during all of this. Oh, how I love Legends of Tomorrow.

As the Legends embrace in a celebratory hug, their powers combine to create an intense force that obliterates all the aliens in the surrounding area. At the same time, Mick and Kayla’s alien babies hatch out of their eggs and literally eat the evil Bishop, eliminating all the obstacles in the Legends’ way.

A happy ending?

When things feel too perfect or happy on this show, it probably won’t last. Last season’s finale ended with Sara being abducted, so I couldn’t help but wonder what was going to happen now.

But before I get to the cliffhanger, I’d like to touch on Mick’s goodbye. He indirectly tells Sara that he’s going to go spend time with his family. It was very weird and strange and could have been done way better. I mean, this is Mick we’re talking about!

And as for Constantine? Well, he’s sort of alive. He bids farewell to Zari (Tala Ashe), revealing that he has a mission to attend to. Constantine’s “mission” and transformation will be explored on in season 7, and I’m excited to see this new side of Matt Ryan.

As for the final moments of the finale, things seem too good to be true, and they are. As the Legends make their way to the ship, another Waverider flies in and blows up their Waverider, and then flies away, leaving the Legends stranded in 1925.

How will they get back? And are they going to stay stuck forever? I sense some epic time-traveling adventures coming on, and we won’t have to wait that long to see them. Season 7 starts on October 13!

All in all, the Legends of Tomorrow season 6 finale did a great job wrapping up a wild, chaotic season filled with many outlandish moments. We started off with the Legends looking for Sara and somehow ended up in the year 1925, where Sara is married and Mick has 48 children.

I will miss Dominic Purcell greatly because he provides comedic relief. I’m not sure how this show looks without him, and quite frankly I’m a bit nervous.

And that’s it for this season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, folks! Until season 7, then.
