Outlander’s upcoming sixth season will be rough for Marsali (Lauren Lyle) and Fergus (César Domboy). Speaking with Radio Times, Lyle teased that the happy-go-lucky romantic couple is about to go through the wringer.
“Marsali and Fergus have always been this fun, romantic couple – young, cool – like the ones that make people laugh and are just really in love with each other and have all these kids,” Lyle said. “This time, it just got really deep and really dark… They’re at their most tested.”
"It’s the most tumultuous time that we’ve seen them and their relationship [in]. Marsali really has, this season – it’s the first time you see her having to step up, and she’s sort of supporting the family and dealing with her own needs."
Marsali and Fergus have become a light in dark times, so this news breaks my heart. Of course, this doesn’t come as a complete shock, since last we saw Marsali she’d injected Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) with hemlock after he sexually assaulted Claire (Caitriona Balfe). Exacting vengeance on someone takes a toll.
Marsali and Fergus face tough times in Outlander season 6
This is going to be a huge turning point for the series in general, especially after the events of season 5. Claire has gone through something incredibly traumatic, and there’s an impending war on the horizon. It’s going to take a literal village, aka Fraser’s Ridge, to weather the storm. Between Claire’s recovery, Marsali’s guilt and trauma, and the American Revolutionary War, Outlander season 6 is going to be one of the toughest seasons yet.
Executive producers Matthew B. Roberts and Maril Davis also teased rough waters ahead on the official Outlander podcast. “Certainly this season, we’ve had a lot of moments. There are some very traumatic and very emotional times. It’s a difficult season for Jamie and Claire and everyone.”
Yeah, I’m not ready for that.
Outlander season 6 is expected to premiere in early 2022.
