This is not an illusion. This is reality. The official trailer for The Matrix Resurrections is finally here, and it looks awesome and spectacular! Later this year, the beloved Matrix franchise will return for its much-anticipated fourth installment, almost two decades after The Matrix Revolutions. Written and directed by original creator Lana Wachowski — without her sister and co-creator Lilly — the movie marks the return of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss as Neo and Trinity…even if they died in Revolutions.

Earlier in the week, we were given a rather interesting teaser for the movie. It came in the form of WhatIsTheMatrix.com, a specifically designed website that prompted visitors with the classic Matrix ultimatum: click the red pill and learn the truth, or click the blue pill and remain ignorant. Depending on which pill was taken and at what time, there were upwards of 180,000 unique videos containing some interesting images. While you’d think that would be enough to keep fans satisfied for some time, the hype keeps building. Now, we have a glorious full-blown trailer. Check it out:

What do we know so far?

Besides Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss, the movie boasts a fantastic cast including Priyanka Chopra, Neil Patrick Harris, Jonathan Groff and Christina Ricci. However, Laurence Fishburne will not reprise his role as Morpheus, unless he’s ridiculously good at keeping secrets. Instead, the role of Morpheus appears to be played by Abdul-Mateen II.

So far, the plot is pretty vague. From the trailer, we can see that Neo has reverted back to his former name, Thomas Anderson, and is living a pretty regular life in the Matrix — seemingly unaware of the events from the original trilogy. I mean, he doesn’t even recognize Trinity. He’s seeing a therapist and we see that he’s taking prescription Blue Pills. Yikes!

However, when he meets a younger Morpheus (Abdul-Mateen II), he’s offered a Red Pill, and that’s when things start to go crazy.

I’m also seeing a lot of callbacks to the first movie, because of course they’ve got to give fans a healthy dose of nostalgia. Keanu also looks a lot more like his character John Wick than Neo… but that’s a story for another day.

The Matrix Resurrections premieres in theaters on December 22. And like so many movie premieres during the pandemic, it also releases on HBO Max on the same day!
