Clark Gregg thinks Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is still Marvel canon, even after WandaVision
Marvel Studios kicked off its growing slate of Disney+ content this year, but WandaVision wasn’t the first series to put a character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the center of a TV show. That would be ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which picked up Phil Coulson’s (Clark Gregg) journey after the first Avengers film.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. never meshed with the MCU in the way shows like WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki do, but it still featured Marvel characters, so many fans still considered it canon. That’s probably why fans were so surprised when WandaVision seemingly nixed the possibility of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. happening in the MCU. The end of the Disney+ series sees Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) gain possession of the Darkhold, and the book is a far cry from the one featured prominently in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4.
It’s a detail fans were quick to point out, and none other than Clark Gregg himself has weighed in. ”I’ve seen places where people felt like S.H.I.E.L.D. or something had been de-canonized by stuff that happened in WandaVision in ways I couldn’t even quite follow, and I’m pretty adept at this stuff,” Gregg said during an appearance on the Marvel Movie Minute.
Why Clark Gregg believes Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is still canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Despite the confusing continuity issues between Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and WandaVision, Gregg still thinks that the ABC show is proper ABC canon. And he cites the words of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who seems to respect all of Marvel’s properties, even the ones that don’t currently tie into the MCU.
"He said, ‘You know, I think you’re really underestimating how powerful and passionate the fans of that show and the Netflix shows are and were,’ and I would never underestimate that, or them, or the possibility [of] those characters, because I really want to see [Daredevil star] Charlie Cox. I really want to see people who love those shows, I want to see it all get crossed over as much as it could, cause I think that’s what the Marvel fans want."
With the MCU currently focusing on the possibilities of the multiverse, there should be ample opportunity to work Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and shows like Daredevil into the official canon. That especially true given how passionate the fans are and how much Feige cares about their opinion. “He’s so classy to the fans,” Gregg said. “I just think that’s why Marvel has done something so special is that their number one priority is taking care of the fans.”
Whether viewers will get closure on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s place in the MCU remains to be seen. However, there are already rumors that Daredevil (Charlie Cox) could make a crossover appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Should they prove true, just about anything’s on the table. We may even see Coulson again.
