Amazon is working on a live-action She-Ra series, because why not?
He-Man and She-Ra are enjoying a resurgence as of late, and this mid-1980s resurgence isn’t over. Variety has announced that She-Ra could soon become a live-action series on Amazon, marking the first time the Princess of Power has gotten the live-action treatment.
There is no writer attached to the project at this point, but the team at DreamWorks Animation will serve as executive producers on the project. They were the people behind Netflix’s hit She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which ran for five seasons, but the new show will be a standalone story without any connection to the Netflix without any connection to the Netflix series.
Live-action She-Ra series at Amazon has 1980s roots
Since the live-action series and the Netflix animated series aren’t connected, it opens up a world of possibilities in terms of possible stories. When She-Ra made her debut in 1985’s He-Man and She-Ra: Secret of the Sword, the story introduced her as Adora, the long lost twin sister of the Eternian Prince Adam, kidnapped at birth and taken to Etheria to be raised as part of the evil Horde. The Horde leader used mind control to keep Adora in line, but the spell was broken when she discovered her true power.
The Netflix series took away her connection to He-Man and instead had Adora fighting with the Horde as a willing participant. It wasn’t until she was a teenager that Adora discovered the Sword of Power and left the Horde to become a rebel fighter.
A new standalone series could feature She-Ra’s original backstory and set up possible future crossovers with He-Man. While the Netflix animated series was special for the way it broke barriers of gender and representation, there is room in this new series to explore other stories and perhaps connect the story back to its roots.
