This year, the world will get to see yet another attempt at adapting Frank Herbert 1965 sci-fi novel Dune. And with a star-studded cast, the new film is promising some big things for moviegoers.

In the lead is Timothée Chalametas as Paul Atreides. He’s joined by the likes of Zendaya (Chani), Oscar Isaac (Duke Leto Atreides), Rebecca Ferguson (Lady Jessica), and many, many more stars.

Critics have already seen the movie, and they’re giving it mixed reviews. But “mixed” is better than “bad,” which mostly describes the reviews for David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation. There’s so much material from the novel to pack into the film that it just didn’t stand a chance as a stand-alone feature. As such, Warner Bros. and director Denis Villeneuve have cut the story in half, with the new movie only focusing on the first half of the book.

Dune 2021 runtime

According to IMDb, the runtime for Dune (2021) is 2 hours and 35 minutes.

To put it into perspective, the 1984 Dune movie was just 2 hours and 17 minutes, and that attempted to cover the entire book. Hopefully the 155-minute runtime for the 2021 movie should be just right.

If Dune ends up being a success at the box office, Warner Bros. will likely get to adapting the second part of the book right away. Its box office could be affected by numerous factors, including the fact that it’s dropping during the pandemic and that it will also be available to watch on HBO Max.

Dune comes out on October 22. We’ll see how it fairs.
