Between Netflix’s live-action Avatar adaptation and everything on the way from Avatar Studios, the world simply cannot get enough of Nickelodeon’s animated phenomenon Avatar: The Last Airbender.

It looks like we’ll be seeing Netflix’s live-action version of the original show first. As for Avatar Studios, which is planning to make animated movies and TV shows in the Avatar world, it could be “years” before we get to watch anything.

That comes direct from original series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, who are running Avatar Studios for Nickelodeon after dropping out of the Netflix project over creative differences. “Mike and I, we’re building an awesome team very slowly at Avatar Studios— small team, but we’re working our way up,” Konietzko told Rise Up Animation, “and it’ll be years before that stuff’s out — but so excited to share all that with everybody. We’ve got a bunch of cool stuff in the works.

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender remake vs Avatar Studios

Avatar Studios plans to make both movies and TV shows set in the Avatar world. Unlike the Netflix show or the original series, the movies will be CGI. According to Avatar News, the movie will be the first in a series and is slated to enter production later this year. CG animation takes a long time to perfect, so we won’t be seeing these projects anytime soon.

In the meantime, there are still plenty of fresh ways to explore the Avatar universe. For example, the creators have worked with writers and artists to bring us tons of excellent comics. There are several collections, some as epic as the show itself, others continuing the story of spinoff The Legend of Korra.
