In the latest episode of The Walking Dead, “Rendition,” Daryl (Norman Reedus) unexpectedly reconnects with Leah (Lynn Collins), with whom he started a romance in season 10. Unfortunately, things got strained when Daryl left the cabin where they had been meeting only to come back later and find that Leah was gone. However, she left her dog — named Dog — behind. Ever since then, Daryl and Dog have been a team.

In “Rendition,” Daryl finds out that Leah has joined a brutal group called the Reapers. When he decides to leave, he calls for Dog. But Dog won’t leave Leah’s side. Ouch.

It was a heartbreaking moment for not just Daryl, but for the fans who have grown accustomed to seeing Dog by his side. But dogs are loyal creatures, aren’t they? Dog going back to Leah and choosing isn’t that out of the ordinary, but it still hurt.

The Walking Dead fans want Daryl and Dog to be together

Speaking with AMC.com, Reedus said he felt “betrayed” by Dog’s behavior. “I mean, it was her dog first. Maybe the dog is telling me that’s Leah. Maybe he’s helping me out,” Reedus said. “She takes off the mask, and the dog still doesn’t come to me, but maybe he’s telling me there’s something good left here. I don’t know. Who knows. On the day, I did feel a little betrayed. I was like, ‘Come on!’ But even if he’s with his trainer and he doesn’t come to me, I get sort of upset.”

For fans worried that something might happen to Dog now that he’s with Leah, Reedus is here to calm us. “No, no, no, they like him. He’s a good dog. And remember he was Leah’s dog, so she won’t let anything happen to him.”

She better not — or else!

On The Talking Dead, host Chris Hardwick asked viewers who they think Dog belongs with. The vote was 96% in favor of Daryl (as it should be), but only time will tell if that’s where he ends up.

Hardwick also asked Collins for her thoughts on the matter. “Well, I mean, I’ve got a double-barreled shotgun,” she laughed. “I think the dog is gonna stay with his alpha, right?”

Well, when you put it like that…
