The Last of Us season 1 release date, cast, synopsis, and more

The fan-favorite video game series from Naughty Dog, The Last of Us, is soon to be adapted into a live-action TV show of the same name. HBO announced that it would be the home of the upcoming series, and original writer/creative director Neil Druckmann will be brought on to shepherd the project.

With the video games being so popular, naturally, fans will want to see the show as soon as possible. The first game was originally released in 2013 on the PlayStation 3, after all.

So what can fans expect to see from The Last of Us? Here’s everything we know about the upcoming HBO series.

The Last of Us release date

There’s no official release date for The Last of Us right now, but there are some clues as to when it will come out. According to a production document that mentions The Last of Us, filming for the 10-episode series began in July 2021. And filming is not expected to end until June of 2022.

With it ending in the summer of 2022, that means we could see the series premiere at the end of 2022. Worst case scenario, it could come out at the beginning of 2023.

It was announced earlier this year that Game of Thrones and The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal will play the role of Joel. His Thrones co-star Bella Ramsey will play Ellie.

The rest of the cast is quite extensive. Gabriel Luna will play Joel’s brother Tommy. Nico Parker plays Sarah, Joel’s daughter. And Merle Dandridge will reprise her role from the video game as Marlene, the head of the Fireflies organization. Other cast members include Jeffrey Pierce (Perry), Anna Torv (Tess), Murray Bartlett (Frank) and Con O’Neill (Bill).

The Last of Us plot synopsis

Assuming the game’s plot will follow the first video game, Pascal’s Joel will become a father figure to Ellie, as the two travel across a dangerous, fungus-plagued, “zombie”-stricken America. In this game, the zombies are known as “clickers,” and if you get bit, you’re immediately infected and begin the horrid process of turning into one of them.

It’s eventually revealed that Ellie has in fact been bitten by a clicker before, though she never officially turned into one. With Ellie immune from the strain, Joel takes it upon himself to deliver Ellie to the Fireflies’ base in Salt Lake City, as they believe Ellie could be key to creating a cure for the outbreak.

If you’re looking for a trailer for HBO’s The Last of Us, there is none just yet. In the meantime, the trailer for the first game should provide enough background and excitement for the series until we get the real thing.
