It’s an honor just to be nominated…21 times with no win.

The 73rd annual Emmy Awards were held the other night, and it was a great time if you worked on The CrownTed Lasso or Mare of Easttown. Otherwise you were probably having a tough night, because those three shows were pretty much the only ones taking home Emmy gold. In fact, according to The A.V. ClubThe Handmaid’s Tale set a record by being nominated for 21 Emmys and not winning a single one of them.

Before this, the record for “biggest Emmy loser” was set by Mad Men, which was nominated 17 times for its fifth season and won nothing. So congratulations, The Handmaid’s Tale! You’re number one, kind of.

The first season was strong, and actually took home eight Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series. But after it adapted the whole of Margaret Atwood’s source novel, the Hulu show didn’t seem to know what to do with itself, and resorted to putting lead character Offred/June (Elisabeth Moss) into one preposterous perilous situation after another.

Still, I don’t like seeing sci-fi and fantasy shows go unrewarded, but this year I think there were better genre shows worthy of recognition:

Next. Sci-fi and fantasy shows completely shut out of Primetime Emmys. dark
