How many Dune movies are there?
By Mia Johnson
You may have been wowed by Warner Bros.’ recent adaptation of the novel Dune. The sci-fi novel was written by Frank Herbert in 1965, and since then, it’s become a hallmark story in the sci-fi genre.
The story, in a nutshell, centers around Paul Atreides, a young heir to the Duke Leto Atreides and Lady Jessica. And the family finds themselves moving to a new planet, Arrakis, to become the next rulers. Though, of course, taking over this new environment does not come easy for the House Atreides. With a plot to foil the duke, and Paul discovering supernatural abilities within himself, things take an exhilarating turn as the young son settles himself on this new world.
Of course, Warner Bros. has been promoting its new film to great lengths, ensuring that this film measures up to the likes of any Star Wars or Marvel film that could be put out. (Though, we’re not sure how director Denis Villeneuve would feel about that.) But this isn’t the first Dune film to come out. So, just how many Dune movies are there?
What Dune movies are there?
With the inclusion of the 2021 Warner Bros. movie, there are only two Dune movies in existence. The first Dune movie was an adaptation directed by David Lynch in 1984. That movie was plagued with many problems and, unfortunately, it was never much of a success.
Warner Bros.’ Dune movie will not be a remake of the Lynch movie. But it will be a totally new adaptation of the book, hopefully in a more competent way. As such, the 2021 movie will only adapt the first half of the book — seeing as there’s a lot of ground to cover.
If all goes well (and it looks like it is), Warner Bros. can give Villeneuve the green light to create a sequel so that he may cover the whole book. And if that’s even more of a success, they may even consider adapting more of the Dune franchise, or at least creating a trilogy using some of the other books.
