The story of Venom and Eddie Brock continues in the sequel film Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which is set to come out in theaters on October 1.

Based on the trailers and other first looks (including a new set of posters that just came out), the movie looks like it will be just as exciting as the first one. But with new director Andy Serkis behind the camera, there will be some differences, and those could make or break this sequel.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage editor Maryann Brandon spoke to SyFy Wire about what it was like working on this new film compared to the first. According to her, while the films are similar in tone, “Carnage is a scarier character.”

"Now there’s another [symbiote]. Woody Harrelson and Tom Hardy have a really good dynamic together … Venom 2’s gonna be really good fun."

The “scarier” part is interesting; many fans were hoping that the original Venom would get an R rating, seeing as its about an alien parasite that possesses a guy and loves killing people. But it ended up being a lot more light-hearted than expected and earned a PG-13 rating. Carnage may be scarier, but Let There Be Carnage also got a PG-13 rating, so he’s probably only a little more ruthless than the last villain, Riot.

On top of that, Brandon described how Serkis’ style differed from that of the director on the first movie, Ruben Fleischer:

"Venom’s a tricky film because you like Venom, but he’s scary. You’re always on the edge of like… you don’t want it to be campy, but you want to like him. And you don’t want to be too scared and you can’t be too horrific with it. Venom’s kind of a horrific character, isn’t it? Which is why Tom Hardy’s brilliant because he manages to do that, [and] Andy Serkis is great at this stuff."

It sounds like we shouldn’t expect a downturn in quality from Venom: Let There Be Carnage. It may not be as hyped up as its Marvel counterpart Spider-Man: No Way Home, but just wait they build to a Spider-Man and Venom crossover. Venom and Carnage are such classic characters in their own right and I’m hoping Sony has a hit with this one.

Next. "Of course" Spider-Man will fight Venom…eventually. dark
