Javier Bardem’s role in Dune is “very short…Hopefully there is a second one!”
By Dan Selcke
Dune is now out in Europe, where it’s already raking in the dough. Those of us on the other side of the pond are left salivating over the prospect of finally seeing Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi book.
Or rather his half-adaptation; Dune only covers the first half of Herbert’s 1965 novel, the jury is still out on whether he’ll get to make a Part 2, although he clearly wants to.
Naturally, many of the stars are on his side, which could be a big help, since a lot of them are major Hollywood players in their own right. Timothée Chalamet plays lead character Paul Atreides, Oscar Isaac plays his father Leto, Jason Momoa is Atreides family swordmaster Duncan Idaho, Javier Bardem plays the Fremen leader Stilgar, and on and on.
Villeneuve even seems to be daring Warner Bros. not to greenlight another movie by hiring some of these big-name actors and barely including them in the movie. “My role is short,” Bardem told Deadline. “Hopefully there is a second one! I hope my character will have more to tell in the story. Let’s see.”
Where does the first Dune movie end?
Zendaya — who plays the Freman warrior Chani — has also said that she only has a little bit of screen time. If you’re familiar with the story of Dune, you can probably figure out about where Part 1 comes to an end. Without giving away too much, Dune mainly follows Paul and his family as they take up residence on the desert planet of Arrakis, aka Dune. They’ve been asked to run the place on behalf of the galactic emperor, but an incident partway through leads Paul and his mother Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) to flee into the desert, where they meet up with Stilgar and his people, including Chani. I’m betting the first movie will end around there.
If you’re in Europe, you can just go to the theater and see if I’m right. For everyone else, Dune will come out in theaters and on HBO Max on October 22.
