The new characters posters for Succession season 3 kind of look like they were made by fanfic authors and I’m not mad at it.
Succession is the true successor to Game of Thrones. It’s a well-written HBO show about ultra-wealthy people battling for control over a (media) empire. The show has been killing it for two seasons and I fully expect that to continue when the third season starts next month.
Part of the reason I’m confident? These new character posters HBO dropped today. This is some intense stuff.
That’s Gerri Kelman (J. Smith-Cameron) and Roman Roy (Kieran Culkin), the general counsel to Waystar RoyCo and the sometimes screw-up youngest son of patriarch Roman Roy. In season 2 they started a…I don’t actually know what you’d call it — an alliance, let’s say — but it’s hilarious and I want to see more of it.
Another very intense picture, this time of WayStar climber Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) and distant Roy relative Greg Hirsch (Nicholas Braun), who usually looks about as befuddled on the show as he does in this photo.
It’s funny that they put Tom with Greg rather than with his wife Shiv (Sarah Snook), the only daughter of Roman Roy. Instead, she’s with her older brother Connor (Alan Ruck), who aspires to play the game of thrones with the rest of his siblings but can’t quite seem to crack it.
Look, I’m not normally a shipper type of person but those first two pictures in particular really zero in on the tension. Lemme just go check Archive of Our Own real quick…yep, Greg and Tom and then Gerri and Roman are the most popular pairings, because of course.
And of course, the last pairing is Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and his son Kendall (Jeremy Strong), who won and Emmy for his performance. Kendall basically declared war on his family in season 2. Game on.
Succession season 3 premieres on HBO and HBO Max on October 17. I can’t wait.
