Raunchy college-aged spinoff of The Boys is a go at Amazon

Fresh off an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, The Boys is flying high. Amazon’s series is a superhero show for our times; whereas Marvel trots out its band of do-gooders, the superheroes on The Boys are vile, selfish, egomaniacal psychopaths who need to be taken down. It’s some solid counter-programming.

Naturally, since the show is a hit, Amazon is spinning it off. The first side project is an as-yet-untitled series set at a superhero college run by Vought International, the mega-corporation behind the creation of the world’s superheroes. Now, Deadline reports that Amazon has officially ordered the show to series, with Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters on board as showrunners.

“Much like Mork & Mindy spun-off from Happy Days—which is an insane and true fact—our spinoff will exist in the Vought Cinematic Universe, yet have a tone and style all its own,” said original series creator Erik Kripke. “It’s our take on a college show, with an ensemble of fascinating, complicated, and sometimes deadly Young Supes. Michele and Tara are stone-cold geniuses, we’re thrilled to have them steer this ship, and grateful to Sony and Amazon for the opportunity. We love this show and can’t wait for you to see it. Also, Baywatch Nights spun-off from Baywatch, and it had vampires. Vampires!”

It did? Why wasn’t it a bigger hit? That sounds great.

The Boys spinoff will be as raunchy and violent as the original show

Fazekas and Butters previously ran the cult CW hit Reaper. They’re also behind the show Hide, a Jekyll and Hyde drama starring husband-and-wife team David and Georgia Tennant.

As for their new show, if you’ve watched The Boys, you know to brace for impact. Deadline describes it as an “R-rated series that explores the lives of hormonal, competitive Supes as they put their physical, sexual, and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the best contracts in the best cities.” The Boys distinguished itself by embracing blood, sex and moral ambiguity. With a cast of super-powered 20-year-olds, things could be even more intense.

There’s no word on when The Boys spinoff might arrive on Amazon. As for the original show, the cast and crew have finished filming on season 3, but I wouldn’t count on seeing new episodes until 2022.
