Warning! Major SPOILERS follow for Venom: Let There Be Carnage
Venom: Let There Be Carnage comes out in U.S. theaters tomorrow, but already there’s been a major leak: the movie’s post-credits scene.
Of course, you’ve read the warning at the top about SPOILERS, but here’s one last caution before we get into it. Because this one is quite exciting — judging by the critics’ reactions to Venom 2, it may be one of the few exciting things about the film.
That’s enough buffer for spoilers. Let’s get into the leak. The video of the post-credits scene has been shared multiple times across the internet over the last day or two. And while we won’t embed the video in this article, you can see it here on Twitter.
Venom 2 post-credits scene description
The screening this clip was taken from was not in English, but that doesn’t make it hard to follow along. Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) lies on a bed discussing something with Venom, the alien symbiote that lives on his body. And out of nowhere, the room begins to shake and bright light pours through the windows. Eddie finds himself in a resort hotel room, and a news report is playing on the television.
The camera then cuts to show the TV, where we see none other than Tom Holland’s Spider-Man! Eddie transforms into Venom, and the symbiote approaches the TV, staring at Spider-Man menacingly and licking his face on the screen. Just after that, a man exits the bathroom of the hotel room and seems to question why Eddie is there.
Venom 2 post-credits scene explained
Well, there’s no two ways about it: Sony’s Spider-Verse movies are finally going to merge with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s amazing to think that not too long ago, Sony tried to remove Spider-Man from the MCU completely.
So what is bringing Spider-Man and Venom together? This all seems to be Doctor Strange’s doing, as we saw in the trailer for the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home.
If we rewind to the end of Far From Home, Peter Parker’s identity as Spider-Man was exposed by Mysterio, and he was framed for the villain’s death. Now, in No Way Home, Peter asks Doctor Strange if he can help the world forget his secret identity. Unfortunately, in the process of performing the spell to make that happens, Peter interferes and Strange accidentally opens up a portal to the multiverse, meaning Spider-characters from different timelines can meet each other, such as Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus. And now it looks like Tom Hardy’s Venom is in the mix as well.
So we’ve got a lot of crossover that’s going to happen in the MCU thanks to the multiverse opening. Venom himself could appear in No Way Home as one of the villains facing Spider-Man. Or if the No Way Home has more lasting effects, we could see him and Spidey crossover in another film as well.
It will be interesting to see how No Way Home will wrap up. A lot of Marvel movies and TV shows have involved the multiverse of late, including Loki, What If…? and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, so I doubt that it’ll be resolved in this third Spider-Man film. It may only be the beginning. And with luck, it might be a way to bring in other Marvel characters we haven’t seen int he MCU yet. (Cough, the X-Men, cough.)
