Game of Thrones veteran Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) is kinda-sorta returning to a medieval-ish milieu in Cyrano, a new movie musical based on the famous 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand. Peter Dinklage plays the title role of Cyrano, an intelligent, brave wordsmith who is too insecure to go after the woman he loves, Roxanne (Haley Bennett). Instead, he tells the handsome Christian (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) what to say so Christian can woo her in his stead.

The play has been adapted many times over the years — Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah put their spin on it in the 1987 movie Roxanne, for instance. This new version is a musical written by Dinklage’s wife Erica Schmidt. Dinklage originally played the role on stage in an off-Broadway production, but clearly, it was so good it had to be committed to film.

Critics praise Peter Dinklage’s performance in Cyrano

Dinklage looks great in his Renaissance era finery, and has all the magnetism we remember from Game of Thrones. The movie is getting solid reviews, with Dinklage being singled out for his performance.

The only bad thing about this trailer is that Dinklage doesn’t actually sing in it; yes, the headline fibs a bit. But surely he has to sing at some point? I’d want my money back otherwise. C’mon, Tyrion, let’s hear those pipes!

Cyrano comes out in theaters this December.
