For a few weeks now, Netflix’s Squid Game has been growing in popularity. And within this past week, the show really seemed to make an impact, taking over all the memes and chatter on social media as it climbed its way to being No. 1 on Netflix’s Top 10 list.

The series’ premise is fascinating: there’s a fictional game show where a group of nearly 500 people play children’s game in hopes of winning a huge cash prize. The only catch is that if any of them lose at the games, they’re killed. Throughout the nine episodes, the audience gets pulled into the story as they follow protagonist Gi-hun as he competes in the games.

But once we get to the end, we’re left with a bit of a cliffhanger. Instead of getting on the plane to visit his daughter in America, Gi-hun turns himself around and takes it upon himself to go back to the island where it all began. Presumably, he wants to put an end to the games once and for all. But we won’t know that for sure unless there’s another season of the series.

Will there be a season 2 of Squid Game?

Sure, Squid Game could be a one-off series. But with an ending like that, this can’t be the last we see of Gi-hun, right? Thankfully, the creator of the series, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has offered his thoughts on if we’ll be getting a season 2 and what it will take for it to happen.

Speaking to Variety, the creator of the series revealed: “I don’t have well-developed plans for Squid Game 2. It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors.”

Hwang says it took him around six months just to write and rewrite the first two episodes alone. And on top of that, the show was apparently rejected for 10 years before it was finally picked up.

With the demand so high for Squid Game right now, Netflix will likely want to turn around a second season quickly. It’s some long-overdue success for Hwang, after all. But as a person who revealed he likes to work more independently, he’ll definitely have to be open to getting a writing team on board for next season. And hopefully that won’t affect the quality of the show.

Plus, seeing how Netflix has probably been eyeing a Stranger Things spinoff for years and may finally be getting around to it, we have a feeling they’ll definitely want to expand Squid Game as well.
