House of the Dragon begins filming at medieval castle in Spain

Filming continues on the first season of House of the Dragon, HBO’s lavish Game of Thrones prequel. Watching the cast and crew shoot in all manner of gorgeous medieval castles, it feels like old times, although we’ll have to see if the finished product lives up to the Game of Thrones legacy.

They certainly have the scenery right. Take a look at the beautiful Castillo de La Calahorra, built between 1509 and 1512 and located in Granada, Spain. If this isn’t a natural Game of Thrones location I don’t know what is:

We have no idea what this place might stand in for. King’s Landing? Oldtown? Sunspear? Perhaps somewhere in one of the Free Cities on Essos? The jury is out.

Whatever its purpose, Los Siete Reinos has spotted some key figures in the area, including Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen) and Olivia Cooke (adult Alicent Hightower). Per LSR, filming will mostly take place in the inner courtyard of the castle.

Dragonfire on the House of the Dragon set at the Castillo de La Calahorra

And after, LSR brings us the news that there’s been filming at the castle at night, and that fire is involved.

But what kind? Dragonfire is the obvious answer. We know Matt Smith is in the area; perhaps the fire comes from Daemon Targaryen’s dragon Caraxes. Alternately, the castle may stand in for Harrenhal, which suffers a devastating fire in the year 120 AD. Is it just another example of the curse of Harrenhal, but was someone trying to kill the members of House Strong, who held the place?

Fire & Blood leaves the answers to those questions ambiguous, but perhaps House of the Dragon will clear things up.

After shooting is done at La Calahorra, House of the Dragon will move on to the Spanish city of Cáceres; Game of Thrones shot a lot of stuff in Spain and it looks like the prequel is following suit.

House of the Dragon will premiere on HBO and HBO Max sometime in 2022.
