Madonna regrets turning down a role in The Matrix
By Dan Selcke
This winter, Carrie-Anne Moss is returning as Trinity in The Matrix Resurrections. But there’s an alternate reality where it’s Madonna…
Whatever you think of Madonna, there are very few singers/actors/celebrities who have been around as long as her, with number one hits in three straight decades. She also had a pretty robust career in there, with winning roles in Desperately Seeking Susan, A League Of Their Own, Evita and others.
And there are some big roles she was offered but turned down, such as Catwoman in 1992’s Batman Returns (she regrets saying no to that one, Michelle Pfeiffer ended up getting the part), and the lead role in 1995’s Showgirls (she didn’t regret saying no to that one). She addressed some of the rumors about her a recent episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and threw in a few of her own. “I also turned down the role in The Matrix. I wanted to kill myself. That’s like one of the best movies ever made.”
Madonna didn’t say which role it was, but it has to be Trinity, right? “A teeny, tiny part of me regrets that just one moment in my life,” she joked. After Salma Hayek bombed her audition, that role eventually went to Carrie-Anne Moss, who will be returning later this year alongside Keanu Reeves in The Matrix Resurrections!
It’s weird to think that there’s an alternate reality where Madonna was making her Matrix return rather than Moss. In any case, the new movie comes out on December 22.
