Last week, HBO gifted us unexpectedly with a trailer for House of the Dragon, the network’s upcoming prequel to Game of Thrones. Featuring giant dragon skulls, a portentous narration and Matt Smith in a Targaryen-blonde wig, it has fans fired up for a return to Westeros.
Among those fans is A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin, who wrote the book on which the show is based: Fire & Blood. He also worked with House of the Dragon showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik to get the series going, and so far he likes what he sees. “And yes, I love it too,” he wrote on his Not a Blog. “Ryan and Miguel and their team are kicking ass and taking names.”
Martin weighed in on the trailer a few days after it went up; he’s a busy guy, after all. “Juggling so many balls, so many projects, posting stuff on my Not A Blog is not my highest priority, so things may always be a little bit behind here,” he wrote. It makes you wonder if that cryptic image of an eight-fingered hand he posted a couple of days prior was about his busy schedule; a he-needs-more-fingers-to-do-everything-that-needs-doing kind of thing?
House of the Dragon filming ongoing in Spain
As for House of the Dragon itself, filming on the first season continues apace. According to Los Siete Reinos, the cameras are now rolling in the Spanish city of Cáceres, which will stand in for King’s Landing just as it did on Game of Thrones.
With the teaser trailer out, the hype train on House of the Dragon has officially left the station. The series will premiere on HBO and HBO Max in 2022.
