Will there be an American Gods season 4?

American Gods endured an incredibly tumultuous journey after three seasons. Between cast members leaving/being fired, showrunners changing, and other delays, the show always seemed like it was on the bubble, and then back in March of this year, fans heard the news that the show would not be renewed for a fourth season.

Starz released a press statement following the cancellation, and personally, it felt a bit underwhelming: “American Gods will not return for a fourth season. Everyone at Starz is grateful to the dedicated cast and crew, and our partners at Fremantle who brought author and executive producer Neil Gaiman’s ever-relevant story to life that speaks to the cultural climate of our country.”

I know there’s not much else they could have said, but I expected a bit more emotion. Despite the controversies, it was still a great show that brought life to Neil Gaiman’s beloved novel. But I can’t say I was surprised by the cancellation because this show barely made it from one season to the next.

In the months since there hasn’t been much news on whether or not the series could find another home, although Gaiman seemed very enthusiastic back in March:

Is American Gods season 4 coming?

Back in 2019, Gaiman and showrunner Charles “Chic” Eglee were making plans for the fourth season, but after the cancellation, those plans came to a screeching halt. But there’s still been buzz that there could be a series wrap-up in the form of a TV movie or something.

We haven’t heard anything about that in recent days, but this sort of thing has happened before. For example, after NBC canceled its time-traveling series Timeless, fans rioted, and it eventually got a movie to wrap up the storyline. The same thing happened with NBC’s Manifest, which was picked up by Netflix for a final 20-episode season.

It’s possible that something like this could happen for American Gods, but I fear too many months have gone by without news. The optimist in me is thinking that they are just ironing out the details and we’ll hear something any day now.

American Gods season 4 storyline

In the American Gods season 3 finale, we saw Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) bound to Yggdrasil, the World Tree, where he was holding a death vigil for Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane), who was killed by Laura Moon (Emily Browning) with his very own spear, Gungnir.

However, in the final moments of what is now the series finale, Mr. Wednesday’s corpse disappeared from the base of Yggdrasil. Was it trickery on Mr. Wednesday’s part? And what does that mean for Shadow? We may never find out.

But if the series does return, we can expect to continue that storyline as well as find out what comes next for Bilquis (Yetide Badaki), who had a wild journey of her own in the third season. And let’s not forget Mr./Ms. World, who was last seen preparing for a war between the Old Gods and the New Gods in the wake of Mr. Wednesday’s death.

If there is a continuation of American Gods season 4, I would be really eager to see Shadow’s journey. If he embraces his divinity as Odin’s son, the story will really be flipped on its head in a way we haven’t seen before.
