Season 6 of Fear the Walking Dead went out with a bang, literally, as Teddy’s (John Glover) warheads were launched and decimated the land, meaning our survivors had to contend not only with zombies but also survive a nuclear wasteland. Their world has completely changed, and in season 7 we’ll see how our survivors deal with the fallout…including radioactive zombies.

As we can see from the official trailer below, our group is split up. Morgan (Lennie James) and Grace (Karen David) are stuck caring for a baby in a barely habitable submarine. Meanwhile, Victor Strand (Colman Domingo) has found opportunity in disaster and created his own community.

According to showrunner Andrew Chambliss, the story was always headed toward a nuclear strike. “It was a decision that we made pretty early in Season 6,” he told SyFy Wire. “Pretty much as soon as we decided to plant a nuclear submarine in the premiere. I mean, we joked and called it Chekhov’s nuclear submarine: when you see it, you’ve got to fire it.” All they needed was the maniac crazy enough to use the nukes, and Teddy was that guy.

Now that the disaster has happened, we’re going to learn how different characters deal with it. “We’re definitely gonna see people react to the challenges in the environment in very different ways,” Chambliss said. “It is really about the characters who had hope, and who wanted to build something better, starting to question whether or not that’s really possible.”

"If you think back to the finale of Season 6, one person in particular who knew it was coming was Grace, just because of her experience in being around a nuclear power plant that had melted down and knowing some of the science and the facts behind what they would be facing."

One character who has made the most of what the world has become is Victor Strand. In the time since the warheads hit, he’s managed to build up a small community — although isn’t all that it’s cracked it up to be. In true slimy Strand fashion, he’s uber-selective about who he allows admittance. “There definitely is going to be an element of the haves and have-nots of the nuclear zombie apocalypse. We’re going to see that Strand is fairly selective in who he allows to enter his world. He’s going to have his reasons for doing what he does. And the people who join him are going to have their reasons for doing what they do.”

Will there be a Fear the Walking Dead season 8?

Syfy also asked co-showrunner Ian Goldberg whether season 7 has a definitive ending, or if it transitions into a new season. The show has not yet been renewed for another outing. “We really did approach this season the way we have with all the previous ones we’ve done on the show, which is we tried to reinvent and evolve on every level,” Goldberg said.

"We want to bring it to a satisfying conclusion. Every episode, every eight episodes and ultimately, every 16 tell a complete story that also leaves room for more story to be told beyond that. No one has told us that there won’t be more story."

Will there be a season 8? We’ll have to wait and see.
