FX’s What We Do in the Shadows is still in the middle of airing season 3; there are just three episodes left in this hilarious vampire comedy. The cast and crew have their minds on season 4, which is filming already. And they teased some of what we can (and can’t) expect.
PerSyFy Wire, showrunner Paul Simms and executive story editor Sarah Naftalis said at NYCC over the weekend that a real-life event will find its way into the first episode of season 4: the blockage of the Suez Canal. However, one real-life event that won’t make it into season 4 is the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which the creators seemed to think just won’t fit into their series. “We’ve created a world where people escape to watch our show,” said Harvey Guillén, who plays Guillermo. “There’s no reason to make those waters murky. We know what’s going on.”
Still, the cast took some creative liberties to imagine what episodes of the series would look like if the pandemic happened in their universe. Matt Berry (Laszlo) imagined, “They’d have noticed the masks, but I think they’d have thought that was some kind of fashion. They’d have more time in the evening to wander the streets because there’d be no one else there.”
Natasia Demetriou (Nadja) also weighed in:
"I think that’s what the beauty of them and the show is: you don’t have to pay any attention to current affairs because they are very self-involved people who have lived through every president, every regime, every pandemic. They’d just say, “Oh! This one was over quickly! Wow, different to the Spanish Flu.”"
What We Do in the Shadows preview
The creators also teased what to expect from the next episode, which premieres Thursday, October 14 on FX and the next day on Hulu. Apparently, Nandor — in some fit of depression — will decide to join a group of vampires who want to blend into the world as humans. (Just imagine how Guillermo will feel about that one.)
And on top of that, we’ll get another celebrity cameo in this episode: legendary voice actress Cree Summer, who’ll be the leader of this new group Nandor joins.
Simms also revealed that we can look forward to more celebrity cameos in these final three episodes. The show has had some awesome people on, from Craig Robinson to Tilda Swinton and even Mark Hamill. So I don’t doubt that these last three episodes will be filled with some awesome talent.
Speaking of Hamill, his character Jim the Vampire is an arch-nemesis of Laszlo Cravensworth, who adopted the persona of Jackie Daytona to escape Jim’s wrath in a hilarious season 2 episode. But according to Simms, they don’t foresee Daytona appearing in the show anytime soon, not in season 3 nor season 4. “The Jackie Daytona thing was such a fun standalone episode, that it feels like to try to duplicate it or bring it back…everyone thinks they want it, but if we did it again, people would go like, ‘Ehh, that wasn’t as fun as the first time.'”
I’m sure if there’s enough demand from fans, we’ll see the return of Jackie Daytona. But in the meantime, we’ve got three more episodes of season 3 to cherish before it comes to an end this month.
