Rick Cosnett to return as Eddie Thawne in The Flash season 8
By Ariba Bhuvad
Rick Cosnett, aka Eddie Thawne, is making his epic return to the DC Universe in The Flash season 8. He shared his excitement on social media this week, and it has fans wondering how the heck his character will return.
I’m not sure where the Arrowverse is going with this character return, but they have my attention. Eddie Thawne died in the Season 1 finale while trying to stop his ancestor Eobard Thawne, aka Reverse-Flash, from coming into existence.
In case you need a refresher, Eddie was Joe’s (Jesse L. Martin) original partner at the CCPD (Central City Police Department) and Iris’ (Candice Patton) fiancé. It’s hard to believe there was ever anyone before Barry (Grant Gustin), but it happened!
Throughout the years, we’ve seen Eddie Thawne pop up here and there for a cameo or two, but this particular return raises a lot of questions. We haven’t seen the guy in a long time so it makes me wonder, is this a flashback episode? Are there some time-traveling shenanigans involved?
The Flash season 8 will bring back Eddie Thawne
Cosnett took to social media to share the wonderful news, “If you hadn’t guessed … I’m in the new season of #TheFlash.” I’m not sure how we would have guessed, but I’m here for this return!
Given that this is the Arrowverse, Eddie Thawne’s return could happen in a few different ways. Over the years we’ve seen doppelgängers of characters pop up, so it could be that. Or Barry might be mucking around with the timeline again and Eddie could pop up as a result of some anomaly or something. I like the idea of there being a case involving Reverse-Flash and Team Flash having to get Eddie Thawne’s help to solve it.
Things have changed quite a bit since Eddie died back in Season 1 so if this is the real Eddie coming back in some capacity, he might be surprised to learn that Iris and Barry are now married. Let the awkward moments commence!
There’s a chance that Eddie’s return may be a part of the “Armageddon” crossover event that will kick off The Flash season 8. The event already involves Batwoman (Javicia Leslie), the Atom (Brandon Routh), Black Lightning (Cress Williams), Sentinel/Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh), Mia Queen (Kat McNamara), and Ryan Choi (Osric Chau), so why not throw someone else in there?
Perhaps we’ll learn more about this upcoming season during this weekend’s DCFanDome event. A full trailer, perhaps?
The Flash season 8 premieres on Tuesday, November 16 on The CW!
