The Last Kingdom star joins cast of House of the Dragon
By Dan Selcke
Like Game of Thrones before it, HBO’s upcoming prequel series House of the Dragon has a large cast; we’ve cataloged a lot of the actors involved, but in some ways we’ve only scratched the surface, and new names are popping up all the time.
For instance, Spanish-language fansite Los Siete Reinos recently published a photo from the House of the Dragon set in the Spanish city of Cáceres showing actor Ewan Mitchell wearing bracers, indicating he’ll be involved in some kind of combat scene. Fans of Netflix’s historical drama The Last Kingdom might recognize Mitchell as Osferth, the bastard son of King Alfred and a warrior monk who joins Uhtred’s crew.
Mitchell is winning and likable on The Last Kingdom, so he’s a welcome addition to the House of the Dragon cast. He also has experience in a medieval milieu — there seem to be a group of people who often cross over between Game of Thrones, Vikings, The Last Kingdom, Outlander and other assorted historical shows. Some people just look right in period clothing.
Who is Ewan Mitchell playing in House of the Dragon?
It’s harder to know who Mitchell is playing. According to LSR, Mitchell spent a lot of time in Cáceres with actors who are playing members of the Kingsguard for King Viserys I Targaryen, who ruled Westeros some 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Perhaps he’s also playing a member of the Kingsguard; characters like Ser Wills Fell, Ser Rickard Thorne, Ser Steffon Darklyn and Ser Lorent Marbrand are still unaccounted for.
It’s also possible that Mitchell could have a bigger role. Instead of playing one of the king’s protectors, what if he’s one of the king’s sons by his second wife Alicent Hightower? We still don’t know who’s playing Aegon, Aemond and Daeron Targaryen.
It’s anybody’s guess at this point, but hopefully we’ll know more soon. House of the Dragon premieres on HBO and HBO Max sometime in 2022.
