After years in development hell, we’ve finally been able to see Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s beloved comic Y: The Last Man brought to on our screens. But sadly the troubles haven’t gone away. Before the first season has even finished airing, FX on Hulu has decided to not move forward with a second. That said, showrunner Eliza Clark is hopeful it’ll continue elsewhere: “We are committed to finding Y its next home.”

Y: The Last Man tells the story of escape artist Yorick Brown (Ben Schnetzer) and his pet capuchin monkey Ampersand, the only two males to somehow survive after a mysterious plague wipes out every mammal on Earth with a Y chromosome. Yorick is sent out with Cupler Ring Agent 355 (Ashley Romans) to find Dr. Mann (Diana Bang), who could work out what caused the “Gendercide.”

The first season of Y: The Last Man has aired to mixed reviews from fans and critics. While the setting is unique, the story is muddied and the show has struggled to raise the stakes. Regardless, there’s a lot of potential in this show — just look at the fantastic source material.

After hearing the news that FX on Hulu had axed the show after only one season, showrunner Eliza Clark issued a statement of her own on Twitter:

“We have learned that we will not be moving forward with FX on Hulu for Season 2 of Y: THE LAST MAN,” she wrote. “I have never in my life been more committed to a story, and there is so much more to tell.”

"We had a gender diverse team of brilliant artists, led by women at almost every corner of our production. Producers, writers, directors, cinematographers, production design, costume design, stunt coordination, and more. It is the most collaborative, creatively fulfilling and beautiful thing I have ever been a part of. We don’t want it to end."

The future of the series has definitely been thrown into doubt, but she isn’t ready to give up hope just yet. There’s every chance that another network will greenlight it for another season. “We are committed to finding Y its next home,” Clark wrote said.

In another tweet, Clark assured fans that they should not stop watching just because another season is now unlikely. The cancellation feels rather unfortunately timed because the final three episodes are about to get pretty crazy. “The last three episodes are epic,” she tweeted. “I promise, and tell your friends. We’ll find a home for the show.”

Comic book writer Brian K. Vaughan weighs in on Y: The Last Man being axed

Brian K. Vaughan, who wrote all 60 issues of the original comic alongside artist Pia Guerra, issued a statement of his own on Instagram. “This is not the first time in twenty years I’ve seen Yorick & co. escape the seemingly inescapable!” he joked.

"I love this show, and I’m very hopeful Y will find a new home, not just because it happens to employ more extraordinary women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ+ community—both in front of and behind the camera—than any project I’ve ever been a part of, but because they’ve made something spectacular, the kind of thoughtful, contemporary, fearless evolution of the comic that @pia.guerra and I always wanted."

Let’s hope another network decides to pick it up. But if the show is gone for good, it’s sure to go out on a high. You can catch the final three episodes of Y: The Last man airing Mondays on FX on Hulu.
