Jodie Whittaker is recalling the emotional moments she experienced on set while filming her final scenes as the Doctor in Doctor Who season 13. While the actress still has a handful of specials to film before her run is officially up, the finality of season 13 was still enough to make the actress shed a few tears. And with such an amazing show, it’s no wonder this has been a bittersweet time for Whittaker.

“You know what I’m like – I’m a crier,” she told Sky News. “I had to do my final (backstage interview) today. We haven’t finished filming so I can avoid the thoughts a bit more.”

"But obviously with the behind-the-scenes stuff, it was in that slightly concluding way and, “Can you tell us how you feel about the crew?” and then I just lost it.I was just crying my eyes out, absolutely gone. I always knew this is the best time I will ever have on a job. I have felt like that from the start of it."

Of course, no Doctor lasts forever, but it doesn’t make saying goodbye any less hard. “I feel like I will be filled with a lot of grief for it because I kind of… Even thinking about it, it makes me upset,” Whittaker said. “But this show needs new energy. The Doctor, the joy of this part is you hand on your boots – and you hand them on. And I don’t know who, but whoever that is, what a thing to go, ‘You are going to have a right time’.”

Jodie Whittaker praises Mandip Gill

In season 13 of the series, we’re losing companions Ryan and Graham, both of whom had their final run in season 12. Remaining on the TARDIS is Yaz, played by Mandip Gill, who Jodie Whittaker had nothing but good things to say about to the Radio Times.

“I know that this is the best time I’ll ever have on a job,” Whittaker said. “I felt like that from the start of it. I think I’m really lucky as well, because with Mandip, if you’re ever going to be side by side with someone throughout an entire journey – being on set every day with Mandip has been amazing because she’s one of the funniest people I’ve ever met.”

Although it won’t just be Yaz and the Doctor this season. They will gain a new companion in the form of Dan Lewis, played by comedian John Bishop. And there will be a handful of other guest actors appearing in this season as well, including Game of Thrones star Jacob Anderson.

This unique six-episode season should be filled with lots of new surprises, and I can only imagine how emotional it’s going to be for fans when Whittaker’s run as the Thirteenth Doctor comes to an end.
