Marvel has released yet another trailer for the final Disney+ series coming out this year: Hawkeye. And it features a brief glimpse of an important new character coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That new character is Echo, who in the comics has the ability to copy any motion she sees. Played by Alaqua Cox, it looks like she’s just one of the many people trying to get their hands on Hawkeye in the new show. In this trailer, we see Barton tied up, and Echo approaches him with an evil-looking henchman at her side.

The question is: is Echo the one pulling all the strings behind this multi-pronged assault on Hawkeye? My guess is that she is just another deadly agent hired by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). We first saw the mastermind recruit Yelena to hunt down Barton in Black Widow. So perhaps she’s created a rat race to catch the Avenger, and Fontaine has something bigger up her sleeve than wanting to give Yelena a chance for revenge.

You can check out the new trailer in the video below.

Timeline-wise, Jeremy Renner confirmed when the series takes place, saying on Jimmy Kimmel Live that it’s “current.”

“It takes place pretty much as it’s released,” Renner said. “It’s kind of like, a holiday event, if you will. It takes place in New York over the span of the time that it’s actually being released. Not that it’s real time, or anything, but it does take place over a week in New York over Christmas.”

Is an Echo series too much too soon for Marvel?

It’ll be fascinating to learn more about Echo. Back in August, the actress was spotted in Atlanta on the set of Hawkeye, wearing the same clothes that we see her wearing in this trailer. Based on the photos, it’s hard to tell what’s going on in the scene. But she does have a cool-looking motorcycle, so I’m expecting her to be the bad*ss character of this series. And hopefully there’s more to her than her cool-looking facade.

I’m especially hopeful that there’s more to her because the character is reportedly getting her own Disney+ series, which is both surprising and not surprising, considering audiences haven’t even gotten a chance to watch her in Hawkeye yet.

All that is to say that Marvel has really been expanding their universe quickly. Hopefully it’s not too quick. I’m already wary after seeing Eternals, which boasts 10 new superheroes and is now the MCU’s lowest-rated film to date. So perhaps Marvel will change course if they, like some of their fans, find themselves overwhelmed with too much content.
