Netflix has released a trailer for the upcoming second season of The Witcher, its adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s series of fantasy novels, itself expanded upon in the very popular video games from CD Projekt Red.
When last we saw The Witcher, Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) finally linked up with the wayward princess Ciri (Freya Allen). If season 2 follows the next book in the series, Blood of Elves, Geralt will train her to be a professional monster hunter like him, which is what seems like it’s happening in the trailer.
Also the Continent is at war, Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) is having a rough go of it after the climatic Battle of Sodden, and fearsome beasties threaten our heroes at every turn. Watch below!
I can’t say that I love the period-inappropriate music, but anachronism does sorta fit the tone of the show, which is campier than the trailer makes it look. I also like all the monsters — Giant bat! Tree demon! — and the appearance of Joey Batey as the bard Jaskier at the end.
The Witcher season 2 poster
Netflix also released a new poster. If you need evidence of my claim that the show is campy, check out the tagline:
“Destiny is a beast.” They went there.
The Witcher season 2 drops on Netflix on December 17.
