Spider-Man: No Way Home is “Spider-Man: Endgame” levels of epic
By Ashley Hurst
Spider-Man: No Way Home feels like the most ambitious Spider-Man movie ever. Not only is it Tom Holland’s third movie is the web-slinger, but if the rumors are to be believed, it will also mark Andrew Garfield’s and Tobey Maguire’s returns to the franchise, not to mention a whole mess of familiar villains from movies past, including Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock. Even Tom Hardy’s Venom is getting in on it!
All the crossovers are happening because Holland’s Peter Parker begs Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to cast a dangerous spell that would erase the world’s knowledge of his secret identity. But things go wrong and the multiverse is exploded open. Watch the trailer below:
“We’re definitely trying to be ambitious,” director Jon Watts told Empire Magazine. “It’s Spider-Man: Endgame.”
It does indeed sound a lot like Avengers: Endgame, another movie that boasted a ginormous ensemble cast spanning the multiverse. All you need to do is scroll down Twitter or Reddit and you’ll come across thousands of new rumors and supposed “leaks” about the movie. It can be pretty hard to discern fact from fiction with all of these names flying about. We now know that Rhys Ifans’ Lizard and Thomas Haden Chruch’s Sandman will appear in the movie alongside Doc Ock, the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) and Electro (Jamie Foxx).
Beyond that, Watts gave a pretty standard answer when asked about other characters making appearances. “I can confirm those are rumors,” he said.
As exciting as it is to see all of these foes and classic Spideys return to the big screen, the ambition needs to be backed up by a cohesive plot. We’re talking about tons of characters, each demanding a certain amount of screen time to bring us up to speed on them after so many years. It’s going to be interesting to see how it all comes together.
Is Doc Ock using Stark tech in Spider-Man: No Way Home?
Empire also released a new, high-res image of Aldred Molina’s Dr. Otto Octavius, and it looks like he’s had some major upgrades in the 17 years since he last appeared in Spider-Man 2. Most notably, he has the gold and red colors of Iron Man’s suit on his tentacles. It’s currently unknown how he got this upgrade, or how long he’s had it for. Perhaps he stole the Stark tech from Peter’s suit.
Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters on December 17! After myriad rumors and leaks, will the movie live up to the immense hype? Only time will tell.
