Richard Madden jokes that he “hated” acting with Kit Harington on Eternals

These days, it feels like all roads lead to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That’s certainly the case for Game of Thrones veterans Richard Madden (Robb Stark) and Kit Harington (Jon Snow), who reunite on-screen for the first time in over a decade in Marvel’s latest movie Eternals.

The duo only worked together in season 1 of Game of Thrones, never seeing each other again after episode two, “The Kingsroad.” “Next time I see you, you’ll be all in black,” Robb Stark told Jon. At the time, fans had no idea that the next time the two actors would share a scene would come a decade later, with Madden as Ikaris and Harington playing Dane Whitman, aka Black Knight.

“It was terrible,” Madded said of working alongside Harington again during an interview with co-star Gemma Chan for IMDb. “I hated it the first time and I hated it even more the second time.”

Don’t worry, he’s joking, of course. Now for the real answer:

"No, it was great seeing Kit again and being on set with Kit again. And actually, I remember that night of me, you [Chan], and Kit being there. And we’re all friends off-camera, and we’ve actually gone drinking in Camden. And so I flew in and stood in the cold with you guys. It felt like another Friday night in Camden."

There are “parallels” between Eternals and Game of Thrones

Kit Harington also has some thoughts on why he and Madden don’t work together all that often. “I have it in my contract that I only work with Richard if I’m on screen for a very limited amount of time with him,” he joked to a PA news agency. “It was really great actually. We’ve been friends for a long time, we’ve come up in the industry together.”

Game of Thrones was a massive leap in both of their careers, catapulting the two actors to stardom. Madden had his own his hit show with Bodyguard, while Harington has had parts in multiple movies and TV shows. Sharing screentime again brings them back to the beginning. “It’s special working with someone who, I remember those years ago, we were 21 starting Thrones, and we were just so excited about it, and just looking back, we were just little kids and then being in Camden on a Marvel set together, it doesn’t leave you, how special that is,” Harington said.

That said, they don’t share much screen time in Eternals, just as they didn’t on Game of Thrones. But what’s there will still hit hard. The Hollywood Reporter pointed out that in both stories, Madden character lost something to Harington’s: the role of King in the North on Game of Thrones and the Eternal Sersi in Eternals. Harington agreed:

"There are parallels. There’s no mistake, in some ways, how Marvel has placed me and Richard in this. It’s interesting to see two actors, who you’ve seen before in a different world, come into a new world, and then how do you play with that in the world? And I think that’s very clever and quite intriguing. But I definitely think — and I know Richard would agree with this — that our characters don’t necessarily feel very linked in this one. We’ve got our own journeys and our own paths."

Madden and Harington aren’t the only Game of Thrones veterans involved with Eternals, either. Grammy-winning composer Ramin Djawadi, who wrote the iconic score for the HBO show, also composed Eternals.  Watch the final trailer:
